Root Canal Treatment - Myth versus Reality

By Michael Clark, Dentist at EPD

Myth: It Hurts Reality: It really doesn’t! This perception began many years ago when treatment used to be painful. Today, with modern techniques and anaesthetics, having a root canal treatment is no more painful than having a regular filling. In fact, it’s not uncommon for patients to fall asleep during the procedure!

Myth: It takes lots of visits Reality: The majority of root canal treatments are completed in one visit.

Myth: It doesn’t work Reality: Success rates for root canal treatment, when performed correctly and to a high standard, can be as high as 95%. If the tooth is restored with a well fitting crown, good oral hygiene is maintained and the tooth is checked regularly by your dentist, it may well go on to last a life time.

Myth: Its Expensive Reality: A good quality root canal treatment, if needed, should be seen as an investment in your oral health. This investment is actually a lot more cost effective than removal of the tooth and replacement with an artificial one.

Time to say Goodbye…

We are sad to say Goodbye to 2 of our hygienists - Ros and Annie. Ros left us at Christmas to spend more time with her husband and family, and Annie is having a baby in February! Annie is going to be dedicating her time to her family so will not be returning to us after her maternity leave. We wish you both all the very best.

And Welcome…

Taking over the care of Ros and Annie’s patients is Cathryn. She joins us from Cambridge and brings with her a wealth of experience and knowledge. We can’t wait for you to meet her at your next visit.

Fun fact
